Treasure Hunting both real and for fun has been around for a long time.  The thrill has always been in the fact that you can find something of value at the end of a rigorous hunt!

Today, I am going to discuss briefly the history of treasure hunting and how this has become so “romanticized” that we even get our children involved in such activities at birthday parties.

In the “olden days”, people with money, gold coins, valuable jewels, or other precious “booty”; didn’t have a regular bank account that they could safely store their goods.  So, quite frequently, these treasure troves of goods were buried deep in the earth or hidden in caves or secret places.  People felt safer if they were the only ones that knew where their secret cache of goods could be found!

The problem?  These treasure stashers often died before they spend their money or told anyone where it was buried.  This is real history and millions upon millions of dollars worth of treasure is still hidden in the earth.

One of the most common hobby forms of hunting for these caches of gold and silver is through metal detecting treasure hunting.  A metal detector will beep or make some noise when it is run over something made of metal.  The more advanced metal detectors will tell you what type of metal you have found; gold, silver, or even junk.

Many significant historical finds have been made through treasure hunting and metal detecting.  And many people have become very rich.  So, perhaps this is the reason that stories of pirate treasure and piles of gold has become a common birthday party celebration.

The common birthday party treasure hunt consists of various riddles and clues that children will follow and “solve” until they are able to find the treasure.  This treasure typically consists of candy, small toys, or other gifts.  The joy is often found in the hunt and solving of the riddles.

These birthday party treasure hunts actually reflect quite well with those who are searching for real treasure.  There are actually many individuals that seek treasure as a full time occupation.  In addition, there are a number of treasure hunting, deep sea recovery, and other related companies that derive all of their revenues from finding unclaimed treasure.  These are very legitimate companies; some of which are traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

Treasure Hunters in modern times consist of hobbyists and full time treasure seekers.  The professional treasure hunters tend to use more advanced equipment and are better staffed and have more financial backing.

However, the fact of the matter remains that many significant finds have been accomplished by those who are mere “weekend warriors”.  Or those who only occasionally bust out the metal detector hoping for a find.

Some of the more successful treasure hunters (both professional and part timers) are those who truly seek to understand the history of a particular place.  For example, if you want to go treasure hunting in your neighborhood, you will greatly increase your odds of finding something of value by studying the history of your city and its surroundings.

By gaining a clear understanding of where people congregated in ancient times or where people may have been most likely to keep their valuables will help you to uncover those valuables.

Treasure Hunters often will spend months of research in libraries, online, or using old maps, books, journals, or other manuscripts to help unravel a local mystery.  Often times there are local stories that turn out to be true, and maybe Uncle Ned really did bury a 100 gold pieces in his backyard.

There are so many local legends, stories, that the avid treasure hunter will never run out of places to keep looking.

The most common tool used by treasure hunters is the metal detector.  This device will give its user a signal as to when the detector is waived over a piece of metal.  The more advanced treasure hunters will have more and more expensive equipment.  However, the beginning treasure hunter can still make some excellent finds with the cheapest equipment.

The key to successfully finding the lost pot of gold is to research and to keep persevering!  Who knows, maybe you will make the next significant historical find of ancient artifacts right in your own backyard!

Looking to learn about pirate treasure hunts?  Well, you are in luck.  There is lots of information available about bother pirates and treasure hunting.

The fact of the matter is that pirates have always been well known for stealing valuable gold or silver and then burying this treasure for safekeeping.  The idea for these pirates was to go back later for their treasure; however, often times they were never able to live long enough to uncover this treasure!

Now if you are looking to just put on a kids pirate treasure hunt; you can simply do something generic.  However, if you want to make a more memorable experience, I suggest that you learn the real history of a real pirate or famous lost treasure and base the hunt off of these facts.

Not only will you make a fun and memorable treasure hunt for kids; you will be helping them learn to interesting history as well!
